Tired of manually playing the game? Let the enemies kill themselves. Learn the definitive AFK "Thorns setup" for 2026, including hidden damage scaling mechanics and the perfect synergy loop.
In Megabonk, the Thorns stat causes enemies to take a portion of reflective damage directly back to their health pool whenever they successfully land a melee or projectile hit on your character.
Because you are deliberately taking hits to deal damage, your primary objective is Survivability Synergy. Furthermore, Thorns damage is not flatβit undergoes its own scaling formula:
Do NOT pick up Slurp Gloves or Lifesteal Tomes! Countless runs die because players think reflective Thorns damage will trigger Lifesteal. It does not. The game engine treats Thorns as environmental/passive damage. Your only way to sustain health is through raw HP Regeneration items like Medkits, Oats, or the Regen Tome.
While Sir Oofie is a solid tank early on, Athena is undeniably the god-tier character for a late-game AFK Thorns Build. Her unique passive grants her an innate +2 Thorns for every level she gains. Combined with her secondary passive where she deals more damage the lower her HP goes, she scales uncontrollably into Tier 3 maps.
To pull this off, you want your item pool meticulously curated. Here is the mandatory gear requirement.
The global engine of the build. Max this out to Rank 9. Unlocked by blocking 250 attacks with the Aegis weapon.
Vital for keeping you alive while taking hundreds of hits per minute. Exponentiates Spiky Shield damage.
Because Lifesteal doesn't work, massive passive regeneration is your only lifeline.
Emits an AoE damage field when hit. Its damage scales directly dynamically with your Armor stat.
The ultimate loop. Kevin gives you a 25% chance to punch yourself for 1 damage. This triggers all your "On-Hit" Thorns items passively! Learn more about Kevin.
Converts standard single-target thorns reflections into catastrophic explosive AoE blasts upon taking damage.
Stack pure flat healing rate items to outpace the incoming damage stream from the enemy hordes.
If you're going for a pure Thorns run, ditch the aggressive scaling weapons. You want the Aegis (The Shield weapon). Not only is it required to unlock the Thorns Tome, but it blocks incoming attacks while still triggering shockwaves that count towards your localized defensive damage.
If you are attempting to complete challenges requiring purely Thorns kills (like the Cactus achievement), it's highly recommended to banish almost all offensive weapons. Stand still, let the enemies swarm you, and let Athena and the Spiky Shield obliterate the screen.
No. Lifesteal items (like Slurp Gloves) explicitly DO NOT trigger off of passive Thorns reflection damage. Your only way to survive is through raw HP Regen (Medkits, Oats) and high base Max HP.
To unlock the Thorns Tome in your run pool, you must equip the Aegis (Shield weapon) and successfully block 250 enemy attacks in a single run. After completing the run, it will drop from regular chests.
In the current vanilla state of the game without specific legendary modifiers, baseline Thorns reflection damage cannot Overcrit. If you want to see ridiculous multiplied damage numbers, pivot to a Crit/Overcrit Build instead.
